From the approximate 411,000 police-reported crashes involving large trucks in 2014, 3,424 resulted in at least one fatality, while 82,000 ended in at least one non-fatal impairment (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration).
Hit by a Semi-Truck
Any type of car crash can end deadly. Unfortunately, a side-impact accident (also known as a “T-bone” accident) involving a semi-truck or commercial vehicle has the potential to be even more devastating, due to size and velocity.
According to the NHTSA, 79 percent of the fatal crashes involving large trucks in 2013 occurred on weekdays.
Many types of injuries can result from a trucking accident, with the most common including:
- Broken Bones
- Back and Neck Injuries (Whiplash)
- Internal Injuries
- Seat Belt Injuries
- Head Injuries
Have you endured one of the injuries listed above in an accident involving a large truck or commercial vehicle? If so, we want to hear from you. Almost all our time is devoted to handling truck accident and commercial vehicle cases. We are qualified and eager to be your advocates.
In September 2016, the attorneys at Fried Goldberg won a $20 million settlement for a client who suffered from permanent brain damage after his vehicle was hit by a tractor trailer. While the survivor is believed by family to make a recovery, he was still due compensation for missed wages, pain, suffering and all medical bills accrued due to his injuries.
Whether from a rear-end collision or tire blowout, a trucking accident can take on many forms. However, some of the most disastrous wrecks occur when a car is side-impacted or T-boned by a much larger vehicle, such as a semi-truck.
Side-Impact (T-Bone Accident)
Why do side-impact accidents seem to yield some of the most tragic results?
When a car is T-boned by another automobile, there is no buffer between the two masses, meaning the impacted vehicle (and its occupants) takes the full blow of the hit. During this type of collision, a “T” is formed, due to the shape of the wreck (i.e. one car crashes into the side of another).
These types of collisions become even more damaging when a truck, bus or commercial vehicle is involved, due to the fact that the large automobile smashes directly into the portion of the car where a driver and/or passenger is located.
Did You Know: According to the NHTSA, in 2013, 71 percent of people killed in large-truck crashes were occupants of the other vehicle.
Often deadly, T-bone accident injuries can be severe, and frequently include the following:
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs)
- Neck, Back and Spinal Injuries
- Broken Bones, such as:Leg
Lacerations are also common, as are crushed ribs and ear injuries, mainly because of side airbags.
If you do experience an injury after a side-impact or T-bone accident, it’s imperative to seek medical attention immediately. You may feel fine at first, and even walk away from the accident without assistance. Yet certain injuries and other impairments can take a day or two to surface. As such, a visit to the emergency room or checkup with your local doctor is highly recommended.
Common Accident Causes
An accident can transpire from almost any distracted or aggressive driving action, such as texting while driving, speeding, or recklessness in bad weather. However, almost all accidents can be prevented. Drivers have a continual and full responsibility to practice safety measures at all times on the road.
Unfortunately, safety isn’t a goal for all drivers.
Did You Know: In 2013, two percent of large-truck drivers involved in fatal crashes had blood alcohol concentrations of .08 g/dL or higher. A commercial driver can be cited with a DUI (Driving Under the Influence) will a blood alcohol concentration of .04 g/dL (NHTSA).
Negligence is noted for being the main cause behind side-impact accidents, with the most common causes of negligence being:
- Failing to Yield
- Running a Red Light
- Switching Lanes Erratically
- Distracted Driving
Steps to Take after an Accident
As with any type of accident, the top priority following the wreck should be safety. Ensure you and all occupants of the vehicle are safe. If someone is hurt, the immediate response should be to call 9-1-1.
Depending on injuries and your condition after the collision, keep these tips in mind:
- Call the police, and make an official report. You’ll need this information if you choose to pursue a claim.
- Take photographs of the accident, including images of your car, the other vehicle, road and surrounding areas. Pictures can help prove who was at fault for the crash.
- Obtain information from the other driver, such as license plate, driver’s license, phone number and insurance provider. You will need this information when reporting the accident to your own provider.
- Contact your insurer as soon as possible, and file a report.
- Seek medical attention – whether or not an injury is prominent. Remember, impairments can take a few days to transpire. Save all paperwork from the hospital or doctor’s office.
