Briant Mildenhall is a truck accident attorney at Fried Goldberg LLC. Besides his successful career practicing law, being a husband and a father to five kids, and being a vigorous indoor soccer player for the past 14 years, he has a deep passion for helping people. One of the ways he does it is by teaching young legal professionals in Ukraine and Moldova, free of charge for the past five years. This year Briant taught students in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Lviv via Zoom.

Briant is working with a nonprofit called The Leavitt Institute for International Development (TLI), which is dedicated to spreading democracy, ethics, and the rule of law in developing nations.

Briant Mildenhall:

“I have a deep love for Eastern Europe because of two years that I lived in Russia in the late nineties. As a church missionary, about every other year the past five years I have been going to Eastern Europe to Moldova and Ukraine to teach students trial skills. Essentially, I am teaching them about how a trial would work in the U.S. civil and criminal justice system. It has been a remarkable adventure and a chance for me to interact with incredibly smart young people and get to know their culture while practicing my Russian language skills.

This experience has broadened my perspective in so many ways. For example, during my first lessons, I had an eye-opening experience while teaching the students techniques on building credibility of a witness. Part of the fact pattern the students had in their materials for the mock trial competition included a police investigation report from a fictional Chisinau detective. I commented that a law enforcement professional in the United States would have built-in credibility because of the profession and uniform. The students laughed at the idea that a Moldovan jury would believe a police detective because police are generally considered among the least credible and least honest persons in Moldova.”
