The big rig driver was critically injured in the accident. Thomson is in McDuffie County, Georgia in the northeastern part of the state about 37 miles west of Augusta and 118 miles southeast of Atlanta.

The accident happened on I-20 between the 172 and 175 exits at about 6:30 a.m. The accident occurred just before the morning commute and halted eastbound traffic for hours afterward.
